The purpose of Andrew Chapel UMC Preschool (Preschool) and Mother’s Day Out (MDO) is to provide a Christian atmosphere in which the whole child can grow.
The goals of the program are to strengthen self-esteem, help children develop listening skills and ways of interacting with peers, and to teach children how to follow directions while functioning in a group. Above all, children are taught to treat others with kindness and respect.
The classroom provides an environment where children find it acceptable to express themselves. The classroom and schedule are designed to recognize individuality, helping children build a positive attitude toward school and themselves. A comfortable routine is established to promote cooperation between teachers and children. Independence is encouraged by giving children age-appropriate responsibility for their personal needs. Cleaning up, caring for toys and materials, and completing classroom tasks further fosters independence, responsibility, respect, and cooperation.
The program integrates activities that cultivate skills in all developmental areas – gross motor, fine motor, language, social-emotional, and cognitive – while also encouraging imagination. Music, P.E., and Art are a regular part of the Preschool curriculum.
The Preschool program provides a varied curriculum, including music, art, physical education, math, and science experiences for children 3 to 5 years of age. Children can attend from three to five days a week.
Classes for the three year-olds focus on promoting growth in the developmental areas – social, emotional, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, and language – through hands-on learning experiences in a structured classroom setting.
Classes for four and five year-olds have an alphabet-based curriculum and focus on pre-reading, pre-writing, and kindergarten-readiness skills.

The classroom ratio is 9 to 1 for 5 year olds (18/class), 8 to 1 for 4 year olds (16/class) and 7 to 1 for three year olds (14/class).
All of the classes have music and physical education classes on a weekly basis, which are taught by qualified teachers. We also enjoy having special art classes with our staff Art Teacher once a month for most preschool classes.
Additionally, we bring in special programs for enrichment. We have a storyteller almost every month and we bring in other special people, like magicians, a one man band, puppet shows, the firemen and additional programs that relate to our class units.
A snack will be given at mid-morning. Children are to bring their own lunches.
Outdoor play is necessary for muscle development. Weather permitting, each child will go to the playground daily with their class. We are fortunate to have a large basement area for active play if the weather is unfavorable.
Enrollment is open to children regardless of race, culture, or church affiliation. The final decision for placement in any class is at the discretion of the Director and Preschool staff.
Children must be three by October 1 to be in a 3 day, 3 year old class. Children must be 4 by December 31 to be in the MTWF 4s class. Children must be 4 by October 1 to be in the MWThF 4s or the 5 day, 4/5 year old class. Placement in the 5 day, 4/5 year old class, is determined by age, with the oldest children given preference.
All enrolled children must be toilet trained by the age of 3. All enrollments are under a 30-day probationary period to ensure compatibility between the student and the program. All children enrolling must be immunized or have a medical waiver signed by a licensed physician.
The Mother’s Day Out program provides structured playtime, as well as interaction and socialization for children 11 months to 2 years of age. Children can attend from two or three days a week.
MDO is a play-based program. Play is a young child’s “work.” The program is designed to allow children to explore their environment with all their senses, and experience social interactions within their peer group. MDO promotes growth in all the developmental areas – social, emotional, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, and language. The program offers parents a break, while allowing the children to enjoy learning through fun in a developmentally appropriate setting. MDO provides a great foundation for Andrew Chapel’s Preschool classes.
